Common practice for slaves owned by masters who were under age in the late 17th and early 18th century was that until the owner of the slaves came of age the services of any slaves that he owned were auctioned off on a yearly basis at the County Courthouse in January of each year. "In being hired out, sometimes the slave gets a good home, and sometimes a bad one: when he gets a good one, he dreads to see January come; when he has a bad one, the year seems five times as long as it is." (quoted from Moses Grandy. Narrative of the Life of Moses Grandy, Late a Slave in the United States of America.) Moses Grandy was owned by James Grandy and his wife was owned by Enoch Sawyer when Moses’ first wife was sold. Enoch Sawyer also owned his 2nd wife and eventually owned Moses Grandy.

I Caleb ETHERIDGE Sheriff have given & granted the negroes unto Willis COOPER. Witness: Jos. ROLESH; Registered April 13, 1811. [This Miles appears to be the first slave of his name. He was not listed as a boy or an old man. Miles is a very good candidate to be Miles Smith, Sr. The slave sell was ordered by Camden Co. Court but was conducted in Currituck Co. If Willis Cooper was related to Benjamin Cooper, Willis Cooper may have been a resident of Camden Co. No census record for 1800 or 1810 was found for Willis Cooper. John Williams may have been a neighbor of William Nevill. William Nevill had some of the same neighbors as John Cox. Miles lived on William Nevill’s farm in 1808 and Lettice and her son, Miles, lived on Cox farm in 1820. This Miles was sold with Isaac and Charles at a public venue per the Camden County Court. Baxter, known as the Walker, Dozier and Olds farms in Princess Anne Co. Va is restored to him.” In the Will of Levi Walker, it mentioned a man Jack and a man Stephen. Was Levi Walker’s farm the same farm that the letter referred to that had become Oscar Baxter’s farm? Was the man March the same man, March Ferebee, that was on the 1867 deed with Jack Smith? If it was, he was with man Jack and man Stephen on the Levi Walker farm. If this Walker farm became part of Oscar Baxter’s farm, it would explain why Oscar Baxter would have been the last slave owner of Jack Smith and his brother, Stephen Smith, Sr.]

He was listed as born about 1815 instead of 1820. There was a Jack born about 1815 also. I believe that Jack Smith was already with Baxter in Princess Anne Co. However, I cannot rule out that Oscar Baxter didn’t hire them out.]

[This one is very interesting in that it has a Jack, Miles, Moses, Stephen and Lem. Jack was listed as born about 1830, Miles as 1835 and Stephen as 1838. If they were hired out from their regular farms, maybe Frederick Sawyer guessed at their ages. If this was Jack, Miles, Jr., and Stephen, they would have been working together. I believe that Stephen Smith, Sr., was already with Baxter in Princess Anne Co. However, I cannot rule out that Oscar Baxter didn’t hire them out.]

Hezekiah Bright, Jr., mentioned his wife, Elizabeth, in his 1820 Will. His widow may be the same person listed in the 1860 census as Elizabeth, 70 years old. (Book P, p. 153) 15 Nov 1815, Hezekiah Brite, Sr., sold 20 acres to Jesse Eason for $160.00, land in upper Camden County at Joys Fork.
Elizabeth Bright may have been the last owner of Mary Smith & her children in Camden Co. before she moved to Princess Anne Co. & lived with her husband, Jack, on the Oscar Baxter farm.
Wm. Old LW&T Nov. 6, 1854-Dec. 1854. from Wm. Old to son, Wm. Walter Raleigh Old, land from the corner of L. Powell, up the canal (co. line) to Mrs. (E. M.) Brite, to Dr. Baxter, down to Dr. Mullen‘s, along A. Kelly to corner E. Burnham, to L. Powell. Camden Co. Wills 1852-1868, p. 7-13.
Neighbors: William Old - Mrs. Brite - Dr. F. N. Mullen, Dr. O. F. Baxter - Joice Creek
Elizabeth Bright lived adjacent to Dr. Baxter & William Old in 1854 in Camden Co., NC. From the September 1, 1865, letter from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands: "the property of Doctor O. F. Baxter, known as the Walker, Dozier and Olds farms in Princess Anne Co. Va is restored to him with all the rights and privilege of ownership..." The Brights, Baxters & Olds lived in the same area in NC & the Baxters, Olds & Doziers held property in Princess Anne Co.
Joseph Cartwright Ferebee (1825-1903) married Laura Virginia Northern Ferebee (1850-1941, Moyock, NC), the daughter of Phillip Northern & Mary Jane Sanderson Northern. The Northerns & Brights had a close family relationship. "Old" Stephen Smith married Virginia Northern & their daughter, Laura Northern, married Uncle Stephen Smith. These names reflect those of Joseph Ferebee's wife, Laura Virginia Northern Ferebee.
