Was John Smith (1690-aft. 1739), of Currituck Co., NC, the great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, cousin or of no relation to Miles Smith, Sr. (1790-aft. 1880), of Camden Co., NC? The Northern family was connected to the John Smith family & the Miles Smith, Sr., family & was closely associated with the Bright family who owned Mary Smith & her children prior to their gaining their freedom in the 1860s. Marina Smith was a descendant of John Smith. Her daughter, Virginia, married "old" Stephen Smith in 1883 & their daughter, Laura, married Uncle Stephen Smith. The following deeds relate to John Smith & his family.

A peice of land begining Currituck County near to Kittyhawk bay and joining on the land called Rich. SMITHs which land was given to me the said Phillip NORTHERN by my decd. father John NORTHERN last will and testament when had relation to will more at large appears that is to say one hundred and twenty five acres be the same more or less together with all houses edifies and all appurtenences belonging to the said piece or parcel of land. [If this is John Smith’s son, Richard Smith, Philip Northern’s land adjoined Richard Smith’s land. John Smith and his son, Richard Smith, were free black men living on their own property, buying and selling their own land, able to read and write, their actions being their own to choose.

[DB 3, p. 187] Lazarus LINTON to James SCAFF. Sept. 25, 1800. Coming from North Landing Virginia Princess Anne County. Know all men by these presents that I Lazarus LINTON for the love and effection that I have for James SCAFF give convey and by in virtue of these presents put him in full persession of the all my lands, but two hundred acres for the but contained and disposed of in an other deed and I give unto the said James my negro fellow by the name of Isaac Black Smith and all the estate in care of Adam SEAMORS. /s/ Lazarus LINTON. Aug. Term 1801 this deed of gift from Lazarus LINTON to James SCAFF was exhibited in court and the hand writing of said Lazarus was proved by oath of Thomas BAXTER and Joseph DANIEL Esqr. Registered Oct. 6, 1801.
[DB 3, p. 176] Jesse PERRY to Benjamin TAYLOR, SEN. both of Currituck County. June 13, 1801. For the sum of one hundred dollars paid by Benja. TAYLOR SENR. A percel of land situated in the county afsd. begining at a gum a corner tree between Jonathan CASE and Joseph CASE formally standing in Hadley WOODHOUSEs line thence westerly to a corner sasafras standing near north west corner of the plantation that formally was Joseph CASE thence southerly by a line of marked trees to a marked hickory a corner thence a westerly course by a line of marked trees to a pine stump joining the land of Sarah SMITH the corse continued to an oak in the line of Peter LITCHFIELD JUNR. dec'd. thence an easterly corse with said line to a marked gum standing on the north side of the plantation near the old house where Jonathan CASE formerly lived the course continues by a line of marked trees to WOODHOUSEs land thence southerly with said WOODHOUSEs line by a line of marked trees to the first station encluding by estimation fifty acres agreeable to buts and bounds be the same more or less. /s/ Jesse PERRY. In the name of God Amen, I John NORTHERN of the County of Currituck and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and memory bless be to God, do this second day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three, make and publish this my Last Will and testament in manner following, that is to say
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Demsey NORTHERN the land and plantation, called the mill land Joining Joseph BALLENTINEs mill pond beginning at a pine stump in Tatum WILSONs line thence along the said line to the main swamp containing one hundred and fifty acres to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Demsey NORTHERN the cypress swamp that Samuel FEREBEE surveyed for me, begining at a branch on long ridge in William STAFFORDs pattent line and binding on Thomas HAYMANs pattent to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Demsey NORTHERN my new entery laying between long ridge and broad ridge to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Stephen NORTHERN the cypress swamp that Thomas POYNER surveyed for me begining at a oake on the head of East Ridge and running to Maximillian BOWRENs line to him and his heirs forever.
Item I leave the use and benefit of the land and plantation that I bought of James WILKINS formerly called Brights and joining Henery BALLENTINEs land unto my Son Arthur NORTHERN for the term of ten years and if the said Arthur NORTHERN should return within the term of ten years then I give the foresaid land unto him and his heirs forever but if he should not return within the term of ten years I give the aforesaid land unto my Son Stephen NORTHERN to him and his heirs forever.
Item I leave the use and benefit of the land and plantation that I bought of Prescoat NICKEN joining Thomas ELLISONs and Esq. BRIGHT land also the land I bought of Jos. HAYMAN joining Thos. COX and Marmaduke COX land unto my son Stephen NORTHERN for the term of ten years and if he should live the said term of ten years then I give the aforesaid land unto my Son STEPHEN NORTHERN to him and his heirs forever but if my son Stephen NORTHERN should depart this life before expiration of the said time of ten years and no heir lawfully begotten of his body then I give the aforesaid land unto my two sons Demsey NORTHERN and James NORTHERN to be divided between them equally share and share alike to them and their heirs forever.
Item I leave the use and benefit of one half of the plantation that I now live on to Wife Dolly NORTHERN during her natural life or widowhood and after my Wifes death or widowhood I give the foresaid land unto my Son James NORTHERN to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give unto my Son James NORTHERN the remainder part of the plantation I now live on together with the cypress swamp that I bought of John STEWART to him and his heirs forever.
Item I leave the use and benefit of one horse by the name of Prince, one chear and harness, one cart and harness and all the farming utensils, one beaufat and furniture my big desk, one folding table, one tea table and stand, one dozen green stool chairs, the big looking glass, one loom and geiers, two linning wheels, one woolen ditto, two beds and furniture, one negro boy by the name of Bob, one negro woman by the name of Jude and her increase, the use and benefit of the aforesaid property unto my Wife Dolly NORTHERN during her natural life or widowhood and after her death or widow- hood I give the aforesaid property unto my three Sons Demsey NORTHERN, Stephen NORTHERN, and James NORTHERN to be divided among them equally share and share alike to them and their heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Wife Dolly NORTHERN all the money that I have in the house together with all the corn and blade fodder, also all my killable hogs, one tub of honey, one kegg of brandy to her and her heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Demsey NORTHERN one horse by the name of Buck, one bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Stephen NORTHERN one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son James NORTHERN one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.
Item I leave all my out standing debts to be divided as follows My Wife Dolly NORTHERN one equal part, my Son Demsey NORTHERN one equal part, and my Son Stephen NORTHERN one equal part, and my Son James NORTHERN one equal part and my Daughter Clarisea FOSTER one equal part to be divided among them equally to them and their heirs forever.
Item I leave a negro man by the name of Lam to be sold and the money arising from the sale of said negro to be equally divided among all my children then living share and share alike.
Item after my just debts are paid, my will and desire is that the remainder of my property should be equally divided between my Wife and all my children share and share alike to them and their heirs.
Item Lasty I do hereby ordain and appoint my worthy friend Peter BALLENTINE and Simon WILSON executors to this my Last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I the said John NORTHERN hath hereunto set my hand and seal the day and date first above writen. /s/ Jno. NORTHERN (seal)

[DB 9; pp. 63-64] Mar. 4, 1805 - Benjamin TAYLOR, SEN. to Charles GRIGGS, both of Currituck, for 1800 silver dollars, land in Currituck County beginning on the North River Swamp and bounded by where Silbey BARCO now lives, Hadley WOODHOUSE, Rachel BENNETT, Joseph CASE, YOUNGHUSBAND. "To land Formerly owned by Sarah SMITH.” Bounded also by Thos. WHITEs land. Witness Thomas POYNER; Registered July 2, 1805.
